If your travel ideas stem from childhood fairy tales like Hansel & Gretel or Little Red Riding Hood, involving verdant European forests, leprechauns, the big bad wolf, the mean witch, and other surrealistic creatures that dwell in the woods, than Kolarbyn eco stay in Sweden may fulfill your fantasy. Kolarbyn is of course an accommodation in modern-day Sweden, and although you won’t find any weird creatures no matter how hard you look, the eco experience promises to be truly unique. And your stay will make a difference in the protection of the area’s wildlife. To ensure the moose, wolves and beavers will be around for many a millennia to come. And Volunteers are always welcome, making this a unique Voluntourism destination.
Woodland huts with names like Olof and Margareta, warmed by crackling fires and soft sheep skins. I’d like to call one of Kolarbyn’s twelve primitive dwellings home for a night or two, or maybe a whole week. The idea of bonfires and BBQs, a cool refreshing lake, a floating sauna, and open-air breakfasts of just-picked blueberries have me bewitched. But the most fascinating thing about this Scandinavian forest refuge, two hours from Stockholm, is the Moose Safari. Imagine setting out with a small group of adventurers just after nightfall, and spotting a majestic moose through the twilight mist.
Kolarbyn is called Sweden’s most primitive hotel. It is a natural refuge for silence, wilderness and adventure in a beautiful forest setting just a couple of hours away from the capital Stockholm. Guests from all over the world come to relax and enjoy the nature or join a wildlife safari and meet with wild animals in their natural environment.
Kolarbyn consists of twelve little forest huts located in a glade by the beautiful lake Skärsjön. Many guests choose to go to Kolarbyn for lodging in one of the huts, just like a normal hotel, just more primitive and much more adventurous! There is no electricity but live candles and a crackling fire place that will guide you asleep. After a silent night you slowly wake up to bird’d song and a fresh swim in the lake. Kolarbyn is undoubtedly a true nature experience for both family and friends.
The food served is organically produced by local farmers and our eco-friendly forest huts belongs to the local community. As a participant on tours you also help to preserve local nature and cultural traditions, since a part of your fee is used directly to support such projects. For each guest participating in any Moose Safari or Wolf Howling Tours, Kolarbyn donates donate SEK 50 to the World Wildlife Fund, WWF, and their work to protect endangered species in Scandinavia.
